At SelfDesign, we know that learning doesn’t happen in isolation; it happens in kitchens, on forest walks, during hard moments and in the quiet breakthroughs that happen within our day-to-day lives.
As we share our 2025 Community Report, we’re not just looking back on a year, we’re honouring the commitment and resilience of the families, learners, educators and contractors who make our community what it is.

A year that asked us to slow down
As Nikki Kenyon, our Interim CEO, stated in her annual message, “If I were to equate 2025 to a season, I would call it winter.”
Following a time of significant change, last year asked us to listen more closely to our learners, families and to one another. It wasn’t a year of big, visible milestones. Instead, it was a year of tending to what matters most: relationships, trust and the foundations that support our family’s learning journeys.
Through conversations, surveys, gatherings and day-to-day interactions, we listened carefully to what our community is experiencing—what’s working, what’s challenging and where we need to grow. Because at the heart of everything we do is this question: how can we better support our learners, families, educators and contractors?
By the numbers
SelfDesign continues to support learners and families with flexible, personalized learning opportunities through our three main programs: SelfDesign® Learning Community, SelfDesign® Home Learning and HomeLearners Network.

2025 organizational highlights
Much of this year’s work happened quietly, behind the scenes, but it was all focused on strengthening our foundation:
-
- Listening more deeply to our community through conversations, surveys and one-on-one connections
- Bringing contractors from across the organization together at Collab to reconnect
- Strengthening how teams work together across the organization to better support learners and families
- Continuing to prioritize inclusion, accessibility and a sense of belonging for every learner and contractor
- Creating more connections between leadership and governance through open, ongoing dialogue
This work may not always be visible, but it’s what allows everything else to grow.
What we’re carrying forward
Home learning is a deeply meaningful journey shaped by the commitment and connection of learners, families and the people who support them.
And in a year that felt quieter on the surface, what stood out most was the consistency, care and dedication across this community.
As we move into 2026, there is a sense of emerging from that quieter season, carrying forward what we’ve learned, and continuing to grow.
