Details regarding 1 hour of weekly participation Many people have asked what is entailed in the one hour of participation in the Village. What does the hour a week of participation involve? Our program is seeking to develop a third way between home learning and schooling. We are a learning community as our name indicates. We form our community through our interactions online with each other using our specially designed 'Village'. Many friendships formed online extend into daily life as families find kindred spirits. Involvement in the SelfDesign Learning Community includes helping children to 'selfdesign' their own learning and become lifelong learners. It also includes being part of our Village. The 'hour-a-week' is intended as a guideline...this could be as little as 5 minutes a day to review email and check Village News. Other times, you might engage in an online conference on something that really interests you or participate in one of our seasonal Chatauquas. These are forums in which any one in the Village can host a conference for a week and share something that they know or are passionately interested in. Those who actively make the Village a community are amazed at the wonderful support system it can provide to parents of like mind in similar life situations. Children often find friends to write stories with. Science projects, book clubs...the Village can provide a lively forum to enhance and expand your family's learning environment through your connection with others in SelfDesign. Once you have experienced the very family oriented environment, an hour a week may not seem a challenge at all. And there is plenty of help and technical support for how to use the Village just a click or a phone call away. |
